Seasonal Waterfalls

A SEASONAL WATERFALL, above, emerges along Highway 14 in Washington. Skip Tschanz

During this time of year we get the chance to view waterfalls that at other times would not exist. With the late winter rain and snow fall waterfalls present themselves for a short period of time, and if you don't take notice now you won't get the chance again until next year. Read more about the locations of these seasonal waterfalls below.
The Columbia River Gorge is home to 70 year-round waterfalls, but only 9 of them are visible from the highway, to see the rest of them will take some foot power. This week we were able to add 11 seasonal waterfalls to that total. By the way, some of the seasonal waterfalls are spectacular. On the way home I suggest you stop at Starvation Creek Trailhead and walk the short distance to the foot of Starvation Falls. Every time I do I wonder to myself why this parking lot isn’t as full as the one at Wahkeena Falls. Starvation Falls is one of the best kept secrets in the gorge.

Victor Wild former Mt. Hood Snowboarder

Jean-Yves Ahern/USA TODAY Sports
Victor Wild from White Salmon, WA. learned how to snowboard at our own Mt. Hood Meadows. He later became a Russian citizen to assist his ability to be successful in the Olympics. Now Victor Wild has won Gold for Russia parallel giant slalom. Read more about Wild below.

Wild started in his sport at age 7 when his snowboarding parents took him and his brother, Mike, from their small town of White Salmon, Wash., 40 minutes away to Mount Hood Meadows in Oregon. He immediately showed "a need for speed" and a preference for carving turns rather than jumping and tricks, his mother, Carol Wild-Delano, recalls. By seventh grade, his coach recommended he move to a racing program in Wenatchee, Wash. At 16, Victor packed up and moved to join the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club in Colorado just days after receiving his driver's license.
"I still remember him driving out of the driveway in his brand-new truck with all his gear," his mother remembers wistfully. But "Vic has always known what he was about," and he was focused on his sport.

Winter Olympic Conditions Fondly Compared to Mt. Hood

(Photo: Guy Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports)
According to 2014 Winter Olympics snowboarders, Sochi is just like Mount Hood.
The pipe seemed to ride better during the second heat after several riders fell from the first heat.
"It's gonna be tricky, but it's going to really show the good actual snowboarder," said Great Britain's Dominic Harington, who did not advance out of the first qualification heat.
"If you're good at snowboarding, you should be able to get on your back foot and you should prepare for the bumps so you should know how to deal with it. It didn't work out for me, but that's how it goes."

Spring Chinook Season

(By Allen Thomas, Columbian outdoors reporter)

Fishing is open downstream of the Interstate-5 and will be available March 1st through April 7th from Interstate-5 to Beacon Rock for boaters and upstream to Bonneville Dam for bank anglers, with the exception of March 25th and April 1st for commercial fishing only. Read more about the fish to come below.
The fishing seasons were set on Wednesday, but the waiting continues — another six weeks or so — until a projected 308,000 spring chinook salmon enter the Columbia River and head upstream to an angling armada.
The forecast is improved from last year and at this point it appears the river flow will be good for sport fishing in March and April,'' said Guy Norman, regional director the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Happy Fishing Very Soon!
